This is a resource base - for the moment it contains approximately 250 books mostly dealing with the Middle East. The emphasis is on U.S. foreign policy as well as Arab, European and Israeli involvement and reaction to it.
Clicking on “Middle East Bibliography” leads to a master list of all titles. At the top of this page is a search tool titled “Filter”.
For the moment, the master list is primarily a product of daily reading of three newspapers: the European editions of the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal as well as Il Sole 24 Ore. This latter – “The Sun 24 Hours” - is an 150-yr-old institution owned by the Italian equivalent of the Council of British Industry or the National Association of Manufacturers. It has the largest circulation of any European financial newspaper. While espousing both liberal markets and social solidarity, Il Sole seeks to be politically neutral.
Readers will notice that frequently a given book’s entry contains no direct comment on it. Usually in this case the author has either contributed one or more Op/Ed newspaper articles or been mentioned or interviewed in the press. Sometimes there is a offering of all. The UofH believes this mix provides a valuable insight into an author’s point of view in an area in which it is very difficult to maintain an unbiased approach.
Readers will also notice that the material is sometimes hastily written and contains typos. There are occasional homemade abbreviations. It is hoped that these are easily deciferable. (A partial key can be found in the Literature Faculty’s “Toward a Universal Language” – its goal is to have a single spelling of English as well a language that is spelled as it is pronounced.)
The master list is linked to Amazon. The ads to the right of the list (their frequent irrelevance to the material is a source of amusement) are served up by Google. The UofH earns a small percentage of any purchases a reader makes by clicking through.
