In the few days that I spent at the gold-miners' camp, I passed much of the time playing poker and vingt-et-un. I am not at all good at either of these games, but the mining engineers showed so little regard for the calculus of probability that even without being particularly favoured by the cards I won a considerable amount of money from them.
