The spring and summer [of 1848] were filled with a hullbaloo of excited proposals. Sects which had almost been forgotten rose to a great importance and then vanished, including the Concordium, a Socialist society, under a 'Pater' William Oldham, who disapproved of marriage. Its members insisted on a diet of 'unfired' foods and cold water and on the absolute minimum of clothing, which did not include shoes or stockings. The editor of their principal paper, J.F.Duncan, was arrested for causing a disturbance in Bishopsgate by persistently reciting his own poetry. But the rigours of an English February and March by a natural but extreme reaction caused them to decide to emigrate to Venezuela and remove themselves from the scene with a suddenness and completeness never before equalled by a political organisation.
