There was a fair supply of housekeeping utensils... A few men managed to smuggle in silver-plated forks and spoons. These were marks of aristocracy and distinction. There was a curious mania among the prisoners for taking other fellows' spoons. I was told that men of the highest character, surgeons and chaplains included, had been detected in the act of pocketing their comrades' spoons.
