Bought out of slavery by Sir Samuel White BAKER when the latter was travelling in the Balkans and whom she accompanied on his later explorations. The diary of her Nile trip with her husband was published under the title - "Morning Star." London / 1972 / Kimber. Reviewed Geog. Jnl. 139.1.157.

BAKER, Valentine, Pasha

Soldier (Kaffir War, Crimea). Cashiered 1875 after conviction for indecently assaulting a Miss Dickinson in a 1st class compartment of a train between Petersfield and Waterloo. Entered Turkish service and later Egyptian. Defeated by Mahdi-ists at El Teb in 1884. Died at Tel el Kebir.
