BARTH, Heinrich
1821-1865
German traveller-explorer (Sahara, Nigeria, Sudan). In 1850 undertook a crossing of the Sahara with 2 companions (Adolf OVRWEG and James RICHARDSON) for the Br. govt (anti-slavery). After the deaths of O. and R. Barth continued to explore the western Sudan for 3 years until joined by the German Dr. Alfred VOGEL. Later travels in Asia Minor. Prof of geography at Berlin.
