Naval surgeon. With FLINDERS on 1795 New South Wales and Tasmania survey. Dies while working as a miner in South America.
BASTIAN, Adolf
1826-1905
German traveller and ethnologist/anthropologist. Left over 30 published works including
- "Die Völker des östlichen Asien" Jena 1866-1871. ("... an immense storehouse of facts owing little to arrangement or style" – Enc. Brit.).
Also travelled in and wrote about Africa, America, Indonesia and Micronesia.
BATES, Henry Walter
1825-1892
English naturalist. B. Leicester. Set our for the Amazon in 1848 with his friend A.R.WALLACE but the 2 explored and collected separately, W. on the Rio Negro and upper Orinoco, B. on the Amazon where he spent 11 years.
