ADAMS, Robert

ADAMS, Will
1st Englishman to reach Japan where he helped persuade the Shogun Ieyasu to promote trade with the Dutch and English. Adams was pilot-major of a 5-ship Durtch expedition under Jacques MAHU and Simon de CORDES which attempted to reach Japan via the Straits of Magellan 1598-1600. Only one ship (with Adams on board) got through. Later Adams tried to promote trade with England through SARIS and COCKS. 1616-1618 made a voyage to Siam and Cochin China. Died in Japan.
